The Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup

The Festival produces an atmosphere that is unique. The roar of the crowd as the tapes rise for the first race on Tuesday signals the moment when the 12 month wait is over and Jump racing's favourite fixture is back.
During the week, over two hundred thousand people will experience The Festival in person, and across the nation, more than five hundred million pounds will be bet on the outcome of the twenty six races.
Each of the four days hosts a number of Championship races, with the climax of the Jump racing season coming on Friday in the form of the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Festival opens on the sixteenth of March and ends on the nineteenth of March 2010.
Snowdrop Day at Westonbirt School

Enjoy the official first day of spring in the beautiful gardens and Camellia House of Westonbirt School and an optional lecture by a nationally renowned gardens expert .
The lecture will be a light-hearted introduction to Galanthomania - the snowdrop equivalent of Tulip Fever, by John Sales, former Head of Gardens at the National Trust, who is himself a Galanthomaniac. There will also be the opportunity to purchase snowdrop bulbs to create your own display at home next Spring.
The gardens will be open 2-5.30pm, the lecture is due to begin at 3pm.

Badminton Horse Trials

The Badminton Horse Trials are a prestigious four day equestrian event. Horses and their riders compete in a different discipline each day. The trials also have their own shopping village containing a large selection of stalls for visitors to browse.
The trials begin on the thirtieth of April and end on the third of May.
Air Raid Shelter Exhibition

The Living Memory Historical Association has been running a Summer Exhibition for the past 18 years in the Air Raid Shelter of the former Memorial Hospital, Sheep Street, Cirencester. The exhibition illustrates life in the Cotswolds during the Second World War and is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm every Saturday between 5th May and 6th October. Admission is free.
Great Vintage Flying Weekend

The Great Vintage Flying Weekend is Europe's largest celebration of vintage aircraft. As well as hosting two days where visitors can see many Vintage Aircraft there may be a short afternoon display showing some of the most influential Vintage aircraft in action.
This event takes place at the Cotswold Airport in Kemble.
Tetbury Woolsack Races

It is thought that the races originated in the 17th Century by young drovers showing off to local women by running up the hill carrying a woolsack. An official race day has been going for over thirty years now with world records entered into the Guinness Book of Records. The race events are complemented by a street fair featuring varied stalls, a funfair, musical entertainments and roving entertainers.

The tradition is known to be a minimum of two hundred years old and draws thousands of spectators each year. In each race a Double Gloucester Cheese is rolled down the very steep Coopers Hill and twenty competitor’s race after it, the first one to reach the cheese wins both it and the race.

On the 17th July 2010, the 25th Sherston Boules Day will celebrate a tournament that has become the longest-lasting and the biggest one-day boules event in the UK. Day-long live music, entertainments, craft and market stalls, children’s activities and a range of food and drink at pavement bars and cafes will offer a relaxing contrast to often hard-fought matches. This is a day out that the whole family can enjoy as participant or spectator. First matches start at 9.30am on 14 specially laid sandy pitches on Sherston High Street.

WOMAD Festival

The WOMAD Festival is a family-orientated event offering diverse and active musical events. There are also participatory workshops, where the audience has a chance to meet and learn about the visiting artists and their music. National Heritage Weekend is an annual event organised by English Heritage.
The History of Tetbury Society stage an exhibition in Tetbury’s Market Hall to celebrate the history surrounding Tetbury’s buildings and inhabitants.
Town walks are available during the afternoons of both days. The walks are set at various times depending on the subject and the stamina of those walking. Additionally, St Saviour's Church, now a part of the Churches' Conservation Trust and the Gloucestershire Police Museum are open to visitors.

The Ryder Cup Tournament

The first Ryder Cup was held at Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts in 1927. The trophy was donated by English seed merchant Samuel A. Ryder. Over the years the contest has earned a worldwide reputation as the top team event in golfing. Leading players from Europe and the United States entertain thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers around the world. The 2010 Ryder Cup will begin on the first of October and end on the third of October. It is to be held at Celtic Manor which is only a forty five minute drive from The Close Hotel.
Battle of Britain Weekend

There will be a small afternoon flying display of vintage aeroplanes starting at 2.00pm.
You will get the chance to visit all the flying organisations based at Cotswold Airport including The Flying Club, Cotswold Helicopters, Fly2Help, Ultimate High, the Britannia and Buccaneer Preservation Societies, Cotswold Flying School, Kemble Flying Club and of course Delta Jets, and their outstanding collection of privately owned vintage jets.

Autumn Fair 2010 at Westonbirt School

The ever-popular Christmas craft and gift fair, held in the delightful setting of Westonbirt School every Autumn half term, returns this year to raise funds for Help for Heroes and Hope for Tomorrow.
